Ex-situ conservation
This strategy aims to strengthen the species’ survival by expanding its ex-situ conservation. In Germany, current capacity is limited, with ex-situ collections restricted mainly to large Hessian populations (e.g., Frankfurt Botanical Garden). In the Czech Republic, ex-situ efforts are minimal - relying on a single garden and a small private collection derived from just five low-fitness plants.
Establishment of the network of local gardeners
Aim: To establish an integrated ex-situ conservation network
- Create a functional network of local gardeners involved in the "Rescue planting in private gardens" program.
- Engage 10 gardeners (private or institutional) in the Czech Republic.
- Engage 10 gardeners (private or institutional) in Germany.
- Ensure each participating gardener cultivates an average of 50 plants.
- Secure active participation of at least 2 botanical gardens in the Czech Republic, with each planting 50 individuals.
- Secure participation of at least 3 local institutions in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
The program Rescue planting in private gardens creates a connection between nature conservation and public education since the major part of the action is based on communication with locals. We will thus use this approach also for ex-situ conservation of Jurinea cyanoides.
The major indirect effect is to make local people and institutions interested in Jurinea cyanoides conservation and make the care of the species part of their daily routine. If we evoke such enthusiasm, local people will be able to care about natural populations voluntarily, only on the basis of their own opinion.
Creating ex-situ populations
Aim: To prepare suitable conditions for plant growth and for keeping their adaptation in the gardens and establish ex-situ populations.
- Build sand dunes in suitable parts and sites in botanical gardens.
- Build sand dunes in gardens of people and NGOs involved in the "Rescue planting in private gardens" program.
