The Polabí Nature Monument preserves a mosaic of valuable habitat types typical for the Elbe (Polabí) landscape, many of which have become rare due to river regulation, land reclamation, and intensive agriculture.

The area is divided into several isolated parts with different vegetation types, with moisture-dependent habitats dominating across the site. The most extensive of these are tall sedge and reedbeds, wet and mesic meadows, and willow stands. These habitats are seasonally flooded or remain waterlogged due to their proximity to the Elbe floodplain and its network of blind river branches and oxbows.

These conditions support a variety of endangered species, particularly wetland and meadow flora (such as Cladium mariscus, Carex elata, Peucedanum palustre, Lathyrus palustris, Dactylorhiza incarnata, and Ophioglossum vulgatum). The fauna includes amphibians like the European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and the Danube crested newt (Triturus dobrogicus), as well as many wetland invertebrates and nesting birds.

Threats to the site

The main threat to this site is natural succession, which leads to vegetation densing and sprouting of young woody plants, as well as eutrophication.

Site Management

To strengthen the Jurinea cyanoides population at this site, we will clear woody vegetation to create light open habitats, perform regular mowing and remove the top-soil layer with developed ruderal vegetation to establish ideal conditions for target psammophilic species to settle. Within the protected area, seed sowing and planting of Jurinea cyanoides seedlings will take place and the species will be included among the target species.
